Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday stood by his decision to allow the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
“Alam mo kapag nagbitaw ako ng salita, ‘yun na ‘yun. Magpakamatay na ako diyan,” Duterte said. Despite the outrage from human rights victims under the dictatorship.
Duterte said during a midnight conference he accepted “full moral and legal responsibility” for his decision even as it “created division in the country.”
Marcos deserved a place at the heroes’ cemetery since the former leader was part of the resistance movement against the Japanese occupation in the 1940 s.”It is something that is attached to his persona forever. Marcos might not really be a hero, I accept that proposition, maybe. But certainly he was a soldier,” he added.
“The sins of the father, if there are any, should never beset their children,”Marcos alleged sins to the nation should never be blamed to his family he said.
Anong gusto niyo? The guy is already dead. You want the cadaver to be burned? Would that satisfy your rage?” Duterte asked.
Marcos died while on exile in Hawaii in 1989, three years after a people power revolt ended his 20-year reign .
